Lip Blushing: The Tattoo You Never Knew You Needed... And What You Need to Know!

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

If you’ve ever dreamed about having perfectly defined and flushed lips (think of Rosie Huntington-Whitley, Bella Hadid, SZA, or your celeb of choice), it’s time to consider getting your lips blushed.

Lip Blushing is a semi permanent tattooing procedure that enhances the color and shape of your lips.

This non-invasive procedure is a form of permanent makeup that creates fullness and adds the pigment of your choice (without the constant reapplication of lipstick or burning from lip plumping serums).

Lip Blushing lasts for 1-3 years, making it an ideal choice for those seeking an effortless, simplified beauty routine.

Semi-permanent lip tattooing may seem a bit daunting, so read on as we answer some common questions!

Is Lip Blushing a cosmetic surgery?

No! Pigment is inserted into the papillary layer (topmost layer) of the dermis, similar to a microblading tattoo. It’s considered non-invasive, and has little to no downtime. The healing process is also very similar to traditional tattooing and microblading.

Can I get Lip Blushing if I use fillers and/or Botox?

Yes, in fact, they go hand-in-hand! Lip Blushing solves the issue of fillers stretching the skin of your lips and making them translucent. If you’re looking for the ultimate defined lip without the use of lip products, fillers and Lip Blushing are a great duo.

Why does the color look so drastic at first?

Don’t worry, the bold color following your initial appointment will fade once the healing process is completed. Your lips will heal 30%-50% lighter than the initial color, so make sure you don’t plan any important events during your healing time! Unless you’re about the bold look, then by all means!

Does it hurt?

We would compare this procedure to getting a small fine-line tattoo; nothing more than a light scratching sensation! A topical anesthetic cream and gel are used for numbing before and during your procedure. That being said, everyone has a different pain tolerance, but your lip blushing artist will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible.

How should I prepare for my Lip Blushing procedure?

To prepare your lips, gently exfoliate your lips nightly and frequently apply lip balm the week leading up to your appointment. It is not possible to tattoo the lips if your skin is dry or sunburnt! Avoid taking prescription blood thinners, naproxen, ibuprofen or aspirin beforehand or after your appointment, as well as supplements like fish oil, garlic, gingko, and vitamin E, as these can increase bleeding and bruising. Do not drink excessive alcohol at least 48 hours prior to and after your procedure, and do not drink caffeine 24 hours before your appointment. If you’ve had a cold sore in the past, we advise that you consult a doctor to obtain an antiviral medication prior to any lip procedure.

Now that all of your burning questions are out of the way, let’s tackle some misleading assumptions about Lip Blushing.

But the results are so unnatural!”

The whole purpose of lip blushing is to provide the client with lips that are low-maintenance and natural looking. Unnatural lips can be prevented by sticking closely to the authentic vermillion border of your lips, and selecting the correct color with your Blushing artist.

Pro Tip: Test out all of your existing lip colors prior to your appointment so you know what you do and don’t like! Look for which colors complement your complexion the best. An educated client is the best kind of client!

“But there’s so much downtime for recovery!”

False! It takes the surface of your skin approximately 7-10 days to heal, and the tissue underneath will heal within a month. Those pigments need time to settle! Six weeks after your appointment you will be left with your desired pigment. There’s no downtime, just some cosmetic healing.

There will be some light scabbing at first, so make sure to apply the prescription moisturizing ointment frequently. Keeping your lips moisturized will prevent thick, patchy scabbing.

Don’t peel those scabs off, as that will cause your lips to heal patchy.

As long as you follow those steps, you will be left with perfectly pigmented lips!

“There’s no reason to get your lips tattooed.”

There are a variety of reasons why someone would wish to have their lips blushed. This procedure neutralizes natural discoloration, and is also a great alternative to fillers if you are just wanting a slight plumping. It’s the perfect cosmetic enhancement for busy people who want to shave some time off their makeup routine. Effortless beauty is all the rage these days, and Lip Blushing is the perfect way to enhance your natural beauty in a beautiful, low-maintenance way.

No matter what your reasoning is, Lip Blushing provides an immediate confidence boost. There’s something so special about having the freedom to customize your look with semi-permanent makeup.
